FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BAPTISMS
WHAT DOES BAPTISM MEAN?
We believe that baptism is an outward display of obedience and love for Christ. It illustrated Jesus’ burial and resurrection (going under the water and coming back up). Once you come out of the water, it signifies that you have died to your old self, your past, and are leaving it behind; therefore becoming a NEW creation with a NEW life in Christ.
WHY SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED?
One awesome reason is that Jesus himself was! In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands us to be baptized saying, “Go then to all people everywhere and make them my disciples, baptizing them…” Additionally, it is an outward demonstration of your commitment to Christ, much like a marriage ceremony.
WHY SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE CHURCH?
In Romans 10:9-10, Jesus tells us that we should publicly confess our faith. Additionally, your South Hills Burbank family wants to celebrate this monumental decision with you!
IS BAPTISM THE SAME AS COMMITTING YOUR LIFE TO CHRIST?
No, as a church we believe that salvation is given through making Jesus Christ the personal Lord of your life and confessing your sins. Baptism is the outward display of that decision and illustrates death to your old ways and the new life you have in Him.
WHY DOES SOUTH HILLS BURBANK BAPTIZE BY IMMERSION (OR DUNKING)?
Jesus himself was baptized this way and we want to follow his example. Likewise, every baptism in the Bible was also by total immersion. As it states in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “When someone becomes a Christian they become a new person inside. The old life has passed away and a new life has begun.” And we believe the best way to symbolize this burial and resurrection is through immersion!
WHAT IF I WAS BAPTIZED AS AN INFANT OR AS A CHILD AT ANOTHER CHURCH?
Our church recommends that you be baptized again if you have not been baptized by immersion since you became a believer. It doesn’t devalue a prior experience, but simply reflects your desire to be baptized in the same way Jesus was baptized.
WILL I HAVE TO SAY ANYTHING?
No! You don’t need to say anything. When you get baptized, the pastor will ask you to confess your faith, but that will be done personally and quietly – no public speaking required! You will be receiving an email the week of your baptism with more detailed information regarding what to wear, what time to arrive, etc.
